YPR Basics

The purpose of this writing is to provide an understanding of how the YPR (Yaw, Pitch, and Roll) stats on an engine affect the performance of an engine or chassis. It is my hope that this will clear up some misconceptions about YPR and give everyone a better understanding of how it works.

Basic Definition of YPR

Yaw

Yaw is a directional change that involves rotating around a vertical axis. It measures how quickly your ship turns left and right. You do this by moving your joystick or mouse to the left or right.

Pitch

Pitch is a directional change that involves rotating around a horizontal axis. It measures how quickly the nose of your ship moves up and down. Pitching is done by moving your joystick or mouse forwards and backwards.

Roll

Roll is a rotation around a longitudinal axis. Roll, by itself, does not change the direction your ship is facing. Instead, it spins your ship in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. You can do this by using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard or hot keying the maneuver to your joystick if you have the buttons for it.

Measuring YPR

There are three different groups of numbers on engines and chassis associated with YPR. There is a Yaw, Pitch, and Roll value assigned to each engine. The chassis has two sets of numbers. One is YPR Acceleration. The other one is YPR (Max), which is sometimes referred to as radians.

Engine YPR Stats

The value of an engine's Yaw, Pitch, and Roll can be viewed by examining the component in your ship by using the starship terminal or your datapad, or you can examine the part out of a ship in your inventory. This number tells you how fast your ship will turn. The speed at which an engine can turn a ship is not affected by the type of chassis is used. A Y-8 mining ship can turn just as fast as an Actis Interceptor if they are using identical engines.

Chassis YPR Mods

While it is true that a Y-8 and an Actis will eventually turn at the same rate, it will take the Y-8 longer to reach that rate than the Actis does. The numbers associated with a chassis' YPR Acceleration can be viewed by pressing V on your keyboard while piloting your ship. These numbers reflect how fast your ship overcomes inertia or preexisting momentum. The higher this number is, the more responsive that ship will feel. Lower numbers mean that the ship will take longer to reach its maximum turn speed. A general rule for these numbers is that higher mass ships have lower YPR Acceleration while low mass ships have higher YPR acceleration. Heavy variants of low mass ships along with the Actis and Belbullab are notable exceptions to this rule.

The YPR (Max) or radian numbers listed below the YPR Acceleration numbers... (*SNIP* Info needs to be updated)

Speed and YPR

The speed at which a ship is traveling does not directly impact its turning speed. If you have two otherwise identical engines with different top speeds, their turn rates will be identical as long as their throttle settings are also the same. Both ships will be completing a circle at the same time. The difference is the slower moving ship will be making a smaller circle than the faster ship.

Throttle

The throttle setting on a ship does affect its turning rate. Generally, ships turn at a fraction of their maximum speeds if the throttle is set at 0%. As the throttle is increased, the ship will turn faster until it reaches its maximum turn rate. The throttle setting where the maximum turn rate is achieved is called the "sweet spot". Increasing the throttle setting above the sweet spot results in a decrease of the ship's turn rate.

It is important to note that while throttle setting affects Yaw and Pitch, it does not affect Roll. A ship has an equal roll rate at 0% throttle, 100% throttle, and everywhere in-between.

Preview of Intermediate Maneuvering Section:

Sliding: All ships created equally.

Ships using identical engine while maneuvering in the throttle sweetspot. Screenshot taken was not perfect as it is hard to get the screenie exactly when the ship is at full angle of attack, but these are pretty close. I intend to make my added illustrations more pretty in the final version. Ship direction can be verified by comparing red line to ship. Direction of flight can be verified by comparing yellow line to small white "movement lines" and vapor trails coming off ship. Every ship I've tested has demonstrated the same angle of attack, but more tests need to be done to say conclusively that all ships have the same slide, albeit at different speeds.

Basically, all ships slide the same, but ships stall differently. Since ships have to slide to get a stall, then it appears that they are sliding differently, when they are actually stalling differently.
