NOTE: I am currently fixing this guide as of 5/19/19.

When site upgrades were done the coding changed\broke some items on the guide.

I am going thru the guide, and correcting these issues.

Introduction

Hello Everyone,

When I got back into playing SWG via the EMU I started to wonder if there was a way to improve the graphical, and audio experience of my game without sacrificing the original experience I had with it. My search for modifications, and anything to improve my client started.

Although I was finding all sorts of files to help me with this, the biggest issue I had was the fact that none of it was in a single repository nor in many cases was there any form of instructions, or context behind the files. I realized quickly that anyone else coming along would run into the same issue which might discourage them from perusing the same path.

To correct this I have put together a guide to help anyone interested in modifying their game, or just looking for simple performance improvements.

JThanks

I wanted to thank Shadowfox for hosting this site and allowing me to be able to host this guide in a single location. He has been a huge help in setting me up with the site, gathering files, and helping spread this guide out to the rest of the EMU community.

I also wanted to give thanks to all the folks out there making mods, or game improvements to help people make our SWG experience better!

Disclaimer

1. Attempt modifications, and client changes at your own risk! You are responsible for your modifications\game changes, and any impacts to your gaming experience or PC. Do not expect technical support from myself, eqsanctum, or your server admins\hosts.

2. Modifications and client improvements will only effect your PC, and your game. There is no impact to the host server or other players. No one will be able to see your changes in-game.

3. The modifications and client improvements listed here will not give you an unfair advantage over another player (i.e. cheating). If you’re looking for hacks n’ cheats you have come to the wrong place.

4. Most games, and their servers place modifications in a “Gray Area” with what is allowed, or in their official rules. Check with your server host to make sure modifications are allowed.

5. Your server Host\Admins are not responsible for any technical issues that may occur due to modifications. This includes outright breaking your client, texture bugs, issues with server patches, etc. Do not bother them with mod conflicts, it’s not their responsibility, leave them alone.

6. SWG server hosts should not be able to “see” if you have made these modifications since it only impacts you and your PC. If they can two things have happened:

  •
  • You are cheating, and it didn’t come from here. (Something that impacts the server)
  •
  • They have installed malware to track you, and they shouldn't be doing that.

7. Make a backup of your client data before attempting mods, as you add more, test each one for any potential issues. Slamming a ton of mods in at once is a good way to break something.

8. Not all mods will work the same way! There are many different emu servers, different operating systems, millions of hardware configurations, and in some cases just plain old bad luck. Just because it doesn’t work for you, doesn’t mean it won’t work for others.

Backing up original client files

Quote

Recommendation! I highly recommend backing up your original or "vanilla" files for your server's client! This will allow you quick file access to revert back to the original game in case you have made a mistake in your modding.

[align=Right]

- Larce

Note: Not all PCs will have the same file paths demonstrated here. I will not know where your paths are!

Note: Examples are showing the Reckoning server, your folder name will be whatever server you are using.

Here is an example of how you can make a copy of your vanilla files:

1. Create a folder for yourself, name it something that will let you know it's a folder holding your vanilla version of the game. The easiest way to do this is to right click on your desktop, select new, and then select folder:

New%20Folder_zpsbk2nem2w.JPGExample%20Folder_zpsznroqx26.JPG

2. Go to your PC's hard drive that is holding your EMU server folder\files. It will most likely appear like this in your hard drive's directory as:

File%20Path%20Folder_zpsbkkzqlyq.JPG

Example File path: C:\Program Files (x86)\YOUR EMU SERVER

3. Right click on your EMU server's top level folder, the one that holds on the files, select "Copy":

Copy%20Folder_zpsqfcqi2pn.JPG

4. Open up the folder you created, while in that folder right click inside of it to get the drop down once again. You should have a "Paste" option on the list, select it:

Paste%20Vanilla_zpscup2e6a7.JPG

You should now have your Vanilla files copied over into the folder you just made. You can now store this anywhere you would like on your PC. I have noticed the vanilla client files hover around 2.5 to 3 gigs of data. For most users this should be easily manageable in their storage.

Here is an example of my own backup:

Note: Not all PCs will have the same file paths demonstrated here. I will not know where your paths are!

Note: Examples are showing the Reckoning server, your folder name will be whatever server you are using.

When installing mods you will sometimes run into the need to install mods manually. This happens due to the need to drag n' drop them into your SWG folders manually (no installer) or to prevent file\folder overwriting (Multiple mods that may share same names).

Standard file path for most, if not all SWG EMU servers looks like this:

File%20Path_zps9e7ldjcg.JPG

It will most likely appear like this in your hard drive's directory as:

File%20Path%20Folder_zpsbkkzqlyq.JPG

Example File path: C:\Program Files (x86)\YOUR EMU SERVER

Example of a non-modified client folder:

Either of these download tools will work, my personal preference is WinRAR as it's just easier for me to use. You can download, and find out more about these tools at their sites (Links below):

Note: WinRAR will ask you to purchase it when you load it. Ignore it, no one ever buys it.

[align=left]

What it does: This is a complete UI replacement, and installer.

Larce's Note: This is quite a large mod with it's own installer, below are instructions on how to install the mods, and what options you will have!

Installer

Quote
Special Note!

I have tested the installer with 2 Anti-Virus programs (Avast and AVG). I have not found any problems between the installer, and the security suites. Your mileage may vary, and you may have to allow the installer to work if your PC security suite tries to block it in any manner.

Here are the results from VirusTotal.com (This is to verify the download isn't full of viruses & malware): Link

[align=Right]

- Larce

The Install Icon will look like this:

[hidden]exe.png[/hidden]

When you open up the mod installer you will be greeted with the following 3 pages:

Intro_zpsngeazyv9.JPG
Intro1_zpsbcrnmizi.JPG
Intro3_zpsvebyhtn9.JPG

By default the installer will be looking for the SWGEmu (I.E. Basilisk\Nova). If this is not server you are on, here is how to change the path correctly:

1. First search for your client's main folder (In this demo the SWG Reckoning server is used):

Intro4_zpsdnwqegmi.JPG

2. When you select the main folder the path will change to this:

Intro5_zpsafji7il4.JPG

3. REMOVE "SWGEmu" from the file path. Failure to do will cause the mod to be installed in the wrong folder!

Intro6_zpsebp1zaaq.JPG

Note: File paths will depend on your PC, these are mine, and not paths you should expect on your PC.

Once this has been selected you will then go to the next page that will have the install options:

Compilation & Installer modifications

SWGEmu CU GUI Mod 1.4[glow=purple]Download

What it does: Replaces the stock UI with a CU themed replacement UI

Larce's Note: I recommend not using the group UI options in this installer. The CU group system was meant for 8 players so when you are in a large group you will not be able to see all group members. I recommend using the colored icons for your toolbar and options bar only. Photos include what the installer looks like, what the CU UI looked like, and what I used out of it.

[anchor]HH[/anchor]Missing Parentheses Hotfix[glow=purple]Download

What it does: Hotfix to have parentheses working in chat, but to also have them be invisible on titles, and afk/lfg.

Since the fix is based on font size, there are 2 issues right now, if you change font sizes:

  •
  • You can't have the "Default Chat Box Font Size" on the third setting, anything before or after is fine.
  •
  • "Chat Bubble Font Size" needs to be kept outside of the 0.40-0.99 range
  •
  • "Object Name Font Size" has to stay in the range of 0.80-0.85

Larce's Note: Use this if you use either the CU or NGE UI installers, helps fix text issues that might occur.

Special Note!

We have seen a few server admins opposed to this mod, the removal of effects that "blind" a player are seen as a "cheat" or advantage to some. This is simply not true

Even though the effects are removed, being able to see other players more clearly (visually) in a storm has no advantage over the other player, it does not:

  •
  • Increase Draw Distance (Character, and Character name plates).
  •
  • Magically increase the radius of your radar (Radar and Overhead).
  •
  • Load players faster\further away.
  •
  • Make you a better PvPer (You still suck).

All the core system limitations of draw distance and radar mechanics are still in place. These are game engine limiting mechanics that cannot simply be surpassed by a graphics mod that eliminates fog and sandstorms.

[anchor]LLL[/anchor]SWG Audio Restoration Project [glow=purple]Download

What it does: From Author's post on www.modthegalaxy.com:

Quote

A foreword, this does not bring drastic changes to the music.

This is my attempt to add back in some of the high frequencies that were lost during the compression of the game music (and eventually sounds if all goes well). To notice the changes you will most likely have to have at least external speakers or headphones (not in monitor or laptop). I have been playing SWG and SWGEmu since the very beginning and have always found that the music is a huge part of the experience. As time passed and my audio knowledge and setup improved I began to notice that while the audio compression in SWG was not bad, it wasn’t exactly the best either.

Ok now on to the good stuff.

In general the sounds for SWG are compressed down to a 128 CBR MP3 which was great for the time the game was made. A few of the tracks were even compressed using custom encoder settings so the frequencies above 16 kHz didn’t get removed which is great!

But the problem are tracks such as this one:

mus_player_v_creat_a_defOriginal_zpsznos34l5.PNG

This is track is actually one of the battle defeat sounds that are used. It is relatively short but it is a good example to show my point. The peaks at the beginning are the brass and cymbals and they are actually supposed to peak over 16 kHz. These frequencies are what give them what I can only describe as luster. Without them cymbals crashes sound flat and the brass is missing the edge that it normally has.

My goal is to add back in that luster and edge as best as I can using synthesizers and a few other tools giving me this result:

mus_player_v_creat_a_defRestoredPreCompression_zpsbvkhsbqs.PNG

Then encoding them using custom settings to create a custom full range (including supra and subsonic which I attempted to synthesize using some prediction algorithms) mp3 giving me this as the final result:

mus_player_v_creat_a_defRestored_zps1ycyvuhs.PNG

For those of you still reading there are a few things you need to keep in mind that you may or may not already know:

It is impossible to restore compressed audio to its original state. It will never be the same as it was when it was in the studio before compression! This is just an attempt to synthesize some of what was lost!

My equipment and listening environment are not exactly the best. I am a college student currently living in a dorm and even though I have acoustically treated the room as best as possible (Most of the room is seems to be dedicated to it…) the room is by no means a studio. Even when I use my headphones (EQed mostly flat) and not my monitors, slight coloration of the sound is still inevitable.

I have listened to all these tracks multiple times but it is also inevitable that I made a mistake and just glossed over it every time. These mistakes could include sounds unintentionally making it into the recording (Windows dings, etc.) or accidentally clipping a part of the track. I have tried my best to avoid this but yet again it could have happened so if you hear any of them please let me know and I will get right on fixing them.

I also want to point out that I haven’t listened to all of these tracks ingame, I have tried my best but there are some parts of the game I just don’t play so tell if anything seems off.

Now that that is out of the way I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!

[anchor]L[/anchor]SWG memory expansion[align=right][goto=1]To Directory[/goto]

Note: Not all operating systems will have the same path, nor will all the icons look the same as this demo.

Note: I will not know how\where your paths are exactly, please don't ask.

Note: Example here is using Windows 7 Enterprise edition.

Note: The Shadowfox Compilation mod has an registry installer that will do this automatically for you.

By default SWG only uses 512mb of RAM. This causes client issues many of us are familiar with (rubber-bands, load lag, video jitter, and de-syncs). With this expansion, you can expand the game's RAM to 2Gigs of memory (This is the max due to this being a 32-bit based program). This will help alleviate, but not totally cure these issues. It can also help users who heavily mod SWG with textures, EnB ,and SweetFX mods.

1. Press your Start button and select "Control Panel".

Control%20Panel_zpsrc1syufs.JPG

2. In control panel select "System".

System_zpsrthfmkda.JPG

3. While in the system options, near the top left you should see "Advance system settings". Click it.

Advanced_zpsj3fff3iz.JPG

4. You will get a pop-up, select the "Advanced" tab, and then press the "Environment Variables" button.

Enviroment_zpsnjuznkfl.JPG

5. Click the "New" button, you will get a smaller pop-up to enter variables.

New_zpsslfllk2a.JPG

Type in the following:

Variables_zpsylyhbkbk.JPG

Click "OK" and your settings should take effect.

Text Versions

Variable name: SWGCLIENT_MEMORY_SIZE_MB

Variable Value: 1024 (for 1Gig) or 2048 (for 2Gigs)

Note: if your PC only has 2gigs of memory (usually associated with XP or Vista machines) I recommend using the 1Gig option. Any system using 4gigs or more can easily use the 2Gig option.

6. In-game verification. To verify you have correctly made this change, log into your game. While in game press: Ctrl+shift+G. You should get a pop-up with your client details, the very top line will show you your current FPS and RAM:

In-Game_zpsezniowjj.JPG

If you have xxxx/1048 (1gig option) or xxxx/2048 (2gig option) your settings took effect, and your game is now utilizing more memory.

2. They will drop into the main folder, you may get an overwrite warning as well.

EnB Settings & Functions

This has a long list of options, some are turned on by default, others you will need to turn on or off to see their effects:

Setup1_zpshl4whcwz.JPG

Note: There aren't really any explanations to what any of this is, and why I recommend only use this if your are very familiar with EnB tools already or this just might look like a bunch of goop to you.

How to make changes:

1. Each option has a 1 or 0 next to it. 1 = ON 0 = OFF

2. After making your selections, SAVE THE FILE!!!! (Not doing this will not let the new changes take effect)

3. Either log into your game or observe the changes "live" while in game (Yes you can do this while in game!)

What it does: Allows you to modify your graphics to enhance\change them.

Larce's Note: A very user friendly tool (Details below).

Installation Instructions

Note: This comes with it's own installer. I HIGHLY recommend using this tool if you have never used Enb\SweetFX tools before as this is much more user friendly than the EnB tool.

1. Select the ReShade Install.exe to start the install.

Install1_zpsu0b5eowd.JPG

2. You will get a small pop-up to select your game. Click this button, and search for your client application (NOT Launcher).

3. Example of myself finding the Reckoning application, and selecting it. (Remember, NOT the launcher).

4. Auto-Detect will probably fail, this is alright! Underneath the button, select: Direct3D 9.

5. Success! You have installed the SweetFX Tool into your client folder.

SweetFX Settings & Functions

Now that you have the tool installed, navigate to your client folder (This will vary depending on what server you are on). Within the client folder, you should now see a new folder named: SweetFX. This folder holds an "options" text file where you can make changes\effects to your client.

Within this file you will find many options to choose from:

How to make changes:

1. Each option has a 1 or 0 next to it. 1 = ON 0 = OFF

2. After making your selections, SAVE THE FILE!!!! (Not doing this will not let the new changes take effect)

3. Either log into your game or observe the changes "live" while in game (Yes you can do this while in game!)

Note: Turning on the HDR option removes the "gray fog" over everything in the game if your looking on how I did it with the screenshots below.

Example of what either tool can do. One the left is "Default" SWG, on the right is what happens when you start turning on features:

If you want to have Steam running (Overlay & Friends List). Follow these steps:

1. While in Steam, look near the bottom left of your interface, you should see the "+ Add a Game" button, click it to see the following:

Add%20to%20Steam_zpsksvjoai0.JPG

Select the "Add a Non-Steam Game" option.

2. Steam will then scan your PC looking for any programs to add to it, find your emu server, check the box to the left, and then press the "Add Selected Programs" button.

[anchor]S[/anchor]Client options[align=right][goto=1]To Directory[/goto]

Note: Client options will usually be an option located on your server's launcher. (Reckoning one demonstrated here):

Client_zpsu9g5judn.PNG

These options can help increase\decrease performance\quality of the game. These options will act differently for each user based on their hardware, although there are some "universal options" one can usually select from:

Information - This has details about your PC, and settings. Good way to tell if the game is detecting your hardware properly.

Information_zps1l61uryk.JPG

Graphics - You can adjust your game resolution here, pixel shader, and windowed mode options.

Graphics_zpshfhkfxel.JPG

Note: I recommend selecting: Windowed Mode & Borderless Window. This will make alt-tabbing out of the game easier.

Sound - There is a wide choice in option settings, this will depend on your hardware for best choice.

Audio_zpsl0tg0lfw.JPG

Game - There are 2 options in here of importance:

Game_zpsa0nclo0q.JPG

1. Skip Intro - Removes the intro video (Scrolling SW text, loud music) ,and will shorten your login to character select screen.

2. Disable Character LoD Manager. This one is recommend for users with higher end PCs.

Note: Character LoD manager helps with how much detail your game shows with\on other players (Think a crowded cantina). The more people, the more details, the more strain on your PC\Game. The manager is there to help reduce the load, but if you happen to have a nice PC, this should not be an issue.

Advance - 2 options here that may help increase performance (Depends on your situation):

Advance_zpsq6liymrk.JPG

Disable World Preloading

Disable world preloading will have a in-game "loading in" effect when loading into the game or on a planet. It will decrease load in times dramatically for most users. Why you ask? By default when you load onto a planet you haven't visited during your current play session... the game... loads.... THE ENTIRE PLANET.

So when your logging in for the first time, or planet hopping, the game is sitting there loading the entire planet, and it's map into your client. This is what causes some users to have load times of 1-2 minutes. Turning this option off will dramatically decrease load times. Under normal loads (Not loading into a player event of mass PvP), user observed a 65-80% time decrease with this disabled.

This is achieved when the option is off, the client will only load what is around you when you load in. This does have one "negative effect" while traveling some items may take a second or two to load (Static world objects), but is usually unnoticeable to most.

Disable File Caching

Disable File Caching is a HUGE one for anyone who sticks around player cities (Grinding professions, entertainers, doctors). The game will cache information, and textures to allow these items to load faster. The only problem with this is over time this degrades the client as it stores more, and more data over long periods of times. This helps cause desyncs! Turning this option off will help reduce desync issues, but not cure them.

This is not recommended for anyone who is playing a character that is "done" and traveling adventure planets a lot. It causes some load issues while traveling long distances especially on adventure planets. I have observed at long distance travel that NPCs (Nest\Random spawns) won't load properly until I'm on top of them, and I don't have time to respond. This can be deadly depending on what you just ran into.

Special Note!I can only show you where these options are, there are TONS of these, and they will react differently to each user depending on your hardware. I recommend testing these options one at a time to see what type of impact they will have on your game.

Note: The in-game options can be found under the "wrench" icon on your options bar menu.

Note: Many of the options here will have a performance impact on your game, use with caution.

Note: Hovering your mouse over an option will explain what it is, and what it does:

The following screenshots are what I have set my settings to (Usually to max). These settings might not work for you! This is meant to be a demo of what you can do, and how many options you have:
